How to Keep Towels and Bedding Fresh in an Airing Cupboard

If your airing cupboard smells a bit stale or your towels don’t feel as fresh as they should, here’s how to fix it:

🧺 Don’t overfill it

When towels and bedding are packed too tightly, air can’t move and moisture builds up. That’s when things start to smell musty. Only store what you actually use and leave gaps between stacks.

🌬 Use slatted shelves

Solid shelves trap damp and heat. Slatted shelves allow air to flow around your items so everything stays dry and aired out. Ours are made to measure so you can maximise your space without compromising on ventilation.

🧴 Add a natural scent boost

Make your own fresheners using cotton balls with a drop or two of essential oil on or your own scent bags; cut a patch of muslin cloth and fill with dried lavender, eucalyptus or lemon peel, add a spoon of baking soda and a drop or two of essential oil, and tie it up tightly. Place one on each shelf and refresh monthly.

📦 Store seasonal stuff in vacuum bags

Guest duvets and extra bedding? Vacuum seal them to keep them dust-free and compact. Just make sure they’re fully dry first, then pop them on the top shelf or behind baskets.

🧼 Fold like a pro

Neat, flat folds = better airflow. Keep heavier items like duvets on the bottom shelf (if not vacuum sealed) and use baskets for flannels or pillowcases to avoid messy piles.

🚪 Let it breathe

Leave the cupboard door open for a while each day to release trapped humidity especially in warmer months.
